Default exhaust

I have read through many different threads, but I can't seem to get a grasp on which is better. Keeping in mind that I still have to have a CC somewhere, what is better both in terms of sound and in terms of power?

Long tube headers is a given

One pipe on each header going all the way back to the rear with two different high flow cats???

or

Two into one into two at the back with only one high flow cat where they meet together in the middle???

What do you think would be the hp difference between these two setups?

You cant have 2 cats on these cars. Only one will fit and you'll have to use Y-pipes. You can buy a high flow one though and it shouldnt be much a restriction. The rest of us are just rebels who dont care about emissions laws

On the original system there were three cats. One just below the original exhaust manifold on each side and then one in the middle. I figured you would just put the high flows right there where the old ones used to be. Am I missing something? This is all pretty new to me, so I am eager to learn.

Incorrect! Of course you can have 2 cats on your car, or 1, or 3, or none.
With a true dual set-up you would use a bullet cat in the pipe behind the header outlet and then take the duals to the back where you can put muffs, elims, or straight pipes.

If you are in a jurisdiction that uses visual inspection as well as sniffers you need to stay with a version the stock config.

If not, it's noise relative to performance that will need to be consdered. That's why there are so many different approaches. I would do an X pipe with true duals and good performance mufflers with your headers if you can get by with it.

Yeah, I have visual inspections where I am. Mine almost didn't pass as it is. They guy knew that the other two cats had been cut out (which I didn't do) but ultimately he said as long as there is something under there it protects both him and me.

One question still remains. What would be the difference between a dual system with two cats vs a system that comes together over a single cat? Also, whats the difference between and x pipe and a y pipe?

Edit: Ok--was just thinking about it....x goes for duals, y goes for single into two.

Oh my bad. I thought '86 was similar to '85 with just the one cat. I didnt think they put the 2 precats on until like '90 or something.
