i just put in new ujoints and getting the new ones in was nearly impossible to get them into the shafts...Once i got them in the joints would hardly move? Are they supposed to be that tight?

You need to check the bores to see if there are any scores. Sometimes there will be nicks from pounding the old ones out.

You will need a round file to clean up the damage.

Nope. Somethings wrong. Jeffvette mentioned one reason why they might have pressed in hard. Another could be a needle bearing fell out of place. If that happened that u-joint is toast already. Most of the time it's just squeezed together too tight. To loosen the u-joint, leave it together like you have it, snap rings in place. Take a punch or chisel, and hammer outward towards the yoke from the center of the u-joint. Just hit the cast part of the u-joint being careful not to hit the seal or anything. That should take care of the too tight condition if the bearings are ok. Next time check for burs and stuff and correct that before pressing in the u-joint as Jeffvette suggested. jmo

Did you hammer them out or use a vise? I will be doing this soon I think so any suggestions or recommendations would be great. Right now, I am probably going to use a vise.

I've done u-joints on a few vettes, always been fairly easy. Look for a needle baring out of place. I use a u-joint press never tried to hammer them out.
