Default Checking Balljoints

OK, I confess, this is not a vette question....
Can anyone clue me in on the correct way to check the lower balljoints on a late model (2003) envoy?
The damn things are in there upside down!
If you jack the car up under the control arm like any normal GM you unload them, I'm thinking the guy is telling me they are shot and he is actually using the wrong method to check them. A cheap Haynes manual didn't say anything about vertical movement (which they have plenty of) it said use a dial indicator on the rim edge and push in and out. If I do this it is way within the tolerance (it says max .08")
Anyway, somebody please pull me out of the fire.
I'd rather spend an afternoon on the vette, never mind the major cash...
Thanks,
JS

the envoy has a modified strut susp. there is no spring pressure on the ball joints when the wheels are hanging free, ball joints are allowed no side play and only .060 of up and down movement (per gm service manual), hope this helps
