Default What do you put on threads?

OK, on head bolts what do you use?

On coolant line fittings, what do you use? Like the ones that come off the intake manifold...

On the temp sensor in the head?

What does everyone like for threads? Teflon tape? That red crap?

Thanks.

On a small block Chevy, where all the bolts hit water jackets, I use ARP thread sealant and torque to ARP specs. I really try to only use ARP hardware as well.

Teflon tape or Teflon paste. I normally use the paste, but if I'm going to crank something up immediately after installing the part I'll use the tape because there is no drying time.

Teflon tape or paste, just like above.

It depends on the threads. Rod bolts for example, I use ARP assembly lubricant. Main caps are the same way, but again I really try to use just ARP hardware. Some bolts, like the cam retainer, lifter spider, oil pump drive, balancer bolt, and a few others get red loc-tite. Far and away what I use the most though is nothing. Most of the time, I just tighten the bolt to TQ spec with nothing special on the threads.

Was there a specific fastener that you had a question about?

That's pretty much what I planned. Just figured I'd ask just in case.

I usually try too hard to be funny on threads but only if the OP question has already been answered

I use Loctite PST pipe thread sealant for head bolts and any fastener/sensor that goes into a coolant or oil passage. It comes in a squeeze bottle and isn't affected by oil or fuel. It works great.

For fasteners that do not need to seal, I typically use Loctite Blue, especially if the fastener is going into Aluminum.

For more information on thread sealant/adhesive usage, I recommend visiting Loctite's website.

I like Permatex No. 2 on head bolt threads. Be careful using Teflon TAPE on sensors. Tape, too thick, can fully or partially insulate the sensor. If the sensor relies on grounding to complete the circuit, it can affect it's accuracy. Where a sealer is desirable on a grounding sensor, I prefer something less solid, like Teflon PASTE.

RACE ON!!!

Permatex on bolts that screw into a water jacket.

Teflon tape on pipe thread type fittings.

Nothing on brass sensors or fittings.
