Got a plastic, POS, fake carbon fiber looking one from Ecklers because the stock one was cracked. This new unit would slide off the shaft with hardly no force. I fixed that by using a little 3m double sided molding tape. However, with that working great now, some times my button gets stuck down! Its not touching the tape or anything wich is just arond the shaft, with the **** pushed down over it to hold it there. This takes place when you put any more than the lightest pressure on the button!!! Then it just stays down, unless I pry it up, or lift the **** tell it pops up again.
Anyone else have a stock replacement shift **** and button that works? Where can I get one. Almost caused me to kill the car by almost hiting reverse at 80MPH!!
There should be a locking ring on the top of the shaft to keep the lever down on it. That's probably why the button is sticking. Go to any Ace hardware they have a good asortment of them. If you look at the shaft you'll see the groove it goes in.
Hope this helps,
If you decide you don't want the carbon fiber email me and I'll buy it from you.
Yes, there should be a round snap ring in there to hold the shifter **** in place, then the button just slides in place. It's one of those round rings with little holes in the tips to spread it open, you know, the type that flies off hits the ground and you hunt for it for hours.
Forgive me, I don't understand. So after the kbob is on the shaft, there is a ring that goes on top of that, than install the button on top of ring? What sive do I need, is there an OEM one to get?
I would go to a store like ACE hardware and get a couple of them that are as big around as your shifter shaft. They got to be like 10 cents a piece so get maybe 3 sizes if your not sure.
I bought my shifter **** from MAD.I thought it was a real nice piece. It really helps the plain black interior stand out a little more.it doesnt look "ricey" either...and yes I reused the snap ring from the stock shifter ****.
How did you get your old one off? Did you pull so hard it came flying off and the ring ended up in the tiny crack behind the rear speakers and you never seen one there? :)
Btw if you get snap rings, get the snap ring pliers for it.The ends fit into the tiny holes on the ring and expand it to remove or install.
I used two small screw drives to spread the ring apart and it just popped up and off. Then I gave the **** a "thump" from the bottom and it popped up off the shaft. The little round ring did fly up and over the seat and landed in the finger slot of the storage tray lock area. I figured I would have to hunt for it but it was spotted by my eagle eye right away. Besides, I have 100s of them in assorted sizes in my nuts and bolts supply. I've hunted for them under the car in the grass many times so I purchased a kit that has many sizes so the hunt is now over.
Thanks guys your great, and your right, I don't have one of these, and never saw the orginal. Likely just flew off, or was never there? Solves the **** issue, and I hope its the reason my botton stays down sometimes!
I'm sure home base/lowes type of places would carry these. Need to get these and the head light motors repaired, will make the car much better to drive on a regular basis :D
