Hello I have posted here a few times and allways got some good advice so here I go again.
My 85 recently got a rebuilt 700R4 and a remanufactured engine, it starts and runs fine but the temp reading rises rapidly with acceloration, it will read 260 in under a min.if i just rev the engine a little.
The sensors are good acording to the tests in the FSM. so i am thinking that it is wiring problem. I went over all the wires i took off for the engine swap and they all were put back on. so I am wondering if anyone thinks a new wiring harness would solve this problem, and if so where can I purchase it? any advice would be very helpfull.
Check your timing. Sounds like the engine is running lean. If your timing checks out pull a plug and take a look at it to get some indication of what's going on.
Does the car have a thermostat in it? If so it's possible that the thermostat is sticking. With the engine running and above the operating temp that matches your thermostat feel the top rad hose and the bottom rad hose. If one is cold and one is hot the thermostat may be sticking, or at the least there may be a blockage in the cooling system.
Did the cooling fans come on when the engine got a little above 200? Not that that has anything to do with the engine getting so hot so fast but It's good to make sure your fans are working properly.
Yeah - it's not going to be anything to do with the Wiring. Either the fans come on or they don't - That might be a part of the problem, but more likely it's something wrong with the fuel/timing, or a mechanical problem with the thermostat, water pump or radiator itself.
A flow restriction (like a bad pump, clogged radiator core or stuck thermostat) would explain it. Another possibility would be if there was NO thermostat in there - too Much flow at higher rpm.
I guess another thing would be to ask if you have all of the air out of the cooling system? The L-98 setup isn't Too bad, but the top of the radiator is still below the thermostat housing - makes it possible to have the thermostat in an air bubble and not work right for That reason.

Is it running hot or as your post suggests, is it just that the gauge READS hot. Since you aren't asking how to make it run cooler, I'll guess it is just a gauge reading problem. There are three engine coolant "devices" on your '85. The ECT sensor for the ECM is in the front of the intake manifold. The fan switch (w or w/o aux fan) is in the right head, between the #6 and #8 spark plugs. Finally the sending unit for the gauge is in the left head between the #1 and the #3 spark plugs. Have you got all the right devices in the correct positions? Bad wiring could make the gauge read hot all the time or cold all the time, but since the gauge moves, it isn't a wiring problem. Try ohm checking the left head sending unit at different coolant temps to verify the sender is sending the correct info to the IP.

I will check the timing

I thought of the t stat being stuck so I removed it just to see if it had any affect on it, it does not change at all. ( I will be putting the Tstat back in) The radiator seems to flow smoothly and the water pump is new.
I do not think it is possible for the engine to get to 260 degrees in a miniute so i beleive that my gauge is wrong, I know that the ECT and the gauge sender are new, however i do not recall anything in the right head. i will check this out. thanks for all the advice
I am currently in Afghanistan so it will be a while before i can actualy check into this so you may see some posts about this again in several months. thanks again
