the car runs like crap and if you let it idle it will die and the tach is messing up and the asr lights are on and when you give it gas it makes a popping nosie and boggs down. does this seem like an opti? the chevy place said it was and they would fix it for 1100 dollars or you think i could do it myself?
Yes, you can do the opti yourself. It will cost you ~$250 in parts. Also with your mileage, while your at it might as well do the water pump, another ~$180.
Check fuel pressure. I was having the same problem and everyone kept saying opti. I wouldn't give into it though and finally found the fuel pump was going. Replaced that and runs like new. If it is the opti, definitely do it yourself. It's not a bad job for the $$$ you can save.

No copy and paste, but here are the basics:
Drain the cooling system
Remove the throttle body - be prepared to clean and rebuild it
Remove the 3 bolts on each side of the water pump (6 in all)
Mark the position of the damper on the front of the engine, remove the 3 bolts (don't remove the center bolt) and remove it - may need some persuasion here
Remove the three bolts holding the opti on
pull it out, check all the seals for the opti and wp, replace as necessary
Look at the new opti and align the key on the drive shaft (92 is different than yours, should be instructions with the opti)
The opti MUST "pop" on, do not use the bolts to seat it!!!!
put the three bolts in and tighten
put a little permagasket on the wp gaskets to hold them in place
Make sure the waterpump drive lines up
slide it on, now making sure no vaccum lines or spark plug wires are in the way tighten the waterpump bolts (use some paste sealer on the threads)
start the car to make sure everything is on and working
turn off (less than 1 min won't hurt anything)
connect hoses and fill coolant

2 of my 4 opti replacements on my 96 LT4 the tach and asr acted up so I'd say opti. Sorry. Pull the codes to be sure though. Auto zone rents a scan tool I use to get the codes when it dies. Good luck!
well went to start the vette and it wouldnt. black smoke came oout the exhaust and then i think it backfired and smoke came form the engine. i hope its just the opti.
After you get the opti on test fire the engine to make sure its Ok.(dont run it for more than a couple secs)
If you have a problem better to find it before the water pump is back on.
ya i brought it down to the chevy place and they put in a brand new maf and temp sensor. then they said it was the opti and it would cost 1100 just to do that and i said no
oh ok. The codes you posted were probably from before you did the MAF so Im at a loss. Only idea left is to go ahead and do the opti/water pump like they suggested. SO there are no other codes?
