Help! I'm into my 92 replacing the plugs and wires but for the life of me, I can't get to the wire ends that are plugged into the opti for the drivers side of the car! There is no leverage to pull them out! What angle do I need to be in to get to them? What do I need to remove to get access? These are the 1,3,5,7 wires at the optispark.
TIA!
I jacked the car up, and got to the wires from under the car. If you're under it, there's a place you can reach your hand up and get to them. I don't remember exactly, but it was either in front of or behind a frame cross member. You will have to twist your arm around a little bit, but it worked for me. Good luck!
You may want to look up past threads on this one. Its been discussed in depth quite a bit.
I originally did them from below, but that was not a nice experience. My hands took a week to recover. There is not much space down there.
Since I just removed and reinstalled the heads and all the accessories on that side of the engine, I think the best way is to remove the belt, remove the tensioner, then unbolt the power steering pump to clear the path to the Optispark. Also, there is a cover over the A-arm you should remove to give you access to the area under the A/C compressor and all the wires below the cruise control box. This is NOT a quick job no matter what method you pick.
You also may want to remove the radiator hose for more room. This way, you get a pretty easy shot at the Optispark and can be assured they snap into place.
Well, mission accomplished... Tensioner assembly! Removed the tensioner and the belt; didn't make it the easiest job, but it made it possible. I was able to get to everything from the top of the engine, climbing all over it! I should have taken pictures :) Everyone warned about the #7 plug and how hard it was to get access, nobody said anything about the #1 plug! That was the hardest of all! Oh, and 8mm Taylor wires are a biatch to route! She runs great though!
You sure you're not thinking of the #8 plug ? That was the only one I had problems with.
I still want to know how some people are getting at the driver's side opti from under the car,
we must have some contorionists on this board :D
