Any body have experience with the 2500,I am having a no spark issue on my 92 and have access to the snap on scanner and didn't know if it is as good as or better then using a laptop.
I, also, have and use the 2500. Works great - nothing like having the "real" thing to work with - although it's starting to seem pretty dated in comparison to the current stuff out there. Does get the job done just fine on "vintage" equipment, anyhow. Just be sure you have the correct year cartridges in the brick and you'll be fine.
I also have and use Tunerpro RT with the moates cables and a laptop - for most "repair" or diagnosis issues the 2500 (or any other good scan tool) is quicker and easier to use. Also - with the "troubleshooter" cartridge in the brick you can work through all of the Service Manual diagnostic proceedures without actually having the manual...
BTW - if you have a spark/ignition problem Neither method (scan tool or datalogging/monitoring) is going to be of much help for you. OBD1 systems didn't "see" downstream from the ECM ignition outputs, and you will not be able to tell what's happening (or Not happening) with the ignition system. Better to get out the service manual and verify voltages/grounds and start running through the diagnostic charts in there...
Also - the "Quick" mechanics check for No Spark on a TPI: Check an injector (while cranking) with either a 'noid light or a test light. If the injector is firing then the ECM and it's inputs are OK (Module, pickup coil, ESC module, etc.) and the no spark problem is on the Secondary side of the ingition (coil, most likely, or a wiring problem). If the injector is Not firing then it couild be Anything - the ECM might be bad, it might not be getting a crank signal (bad pickup coil, bad module), might have a problem with the ESC module, might be a bad connection or wiring problem, etc.
If it has a pulse at the injectors it ought to also have spark - or at least a pulse going to the coil. If it has Nothing then the problem is Before the ECM, or the ECM itself. Does it flash a check engine light - something basic like power and ground at the ECM?
Thank you Rons85, I have the programmable cartridges up to dom03 and asian03 in the 2500 so that is covered but I did not know that it wouldn't run the ignition all the way through like its done on other vehicles.I havn't messed with the 92 much lately as I am working on a 62 I purchased in Dec. but with the season changing I am going to start playing with the c4 a bit. When I started messing with it last year I was using a Haynes manual (not very good book) and if I remember correctly it had me check a wire going to the coil (purple I think but not sure right now)with an analog meter and said it should pulse when the engine was cranked and if it didn't pulse it was the ecm.I purchased an ecm from Mid America or Eklers and that didn't do it.I did have a hypertech thermo piggybacked on the prom and pulled it off when I put the replacement ecm in.I am out of the country and not returning to the U.S. till the 20th of Nov. or I would have checked the color of the wire and what setting the meter was on before posting so please excuse my not being more precise. Thanks, Duff
