Started hearing a bad bearing noise on Friday morning. Diagnosed it as the alternator. Cost $86 for a new one (not reman). Very easy replacement, about 30 mins work, if that. Charging picked up about .3 volts too... bonus.
Also replaced the heater control valve that I ordered a few weeks ago. $57 from http://www.samtaylor.com/html/parts.html, that's 1/2 price of local dealers. Heater works perfect! I must have flushed 10 pounds of rust out of that heater core. The water ran orange for about 15 minutes.
It always cracks me up how people will let little things like this go, instead of fixing it. But I guess the previous owner was thinking these kind of things would be too expensive to fix. I love being able to do my own work. Man the next owner is going to love me, since I'm pretty much doing all this for free. Even if I can recover the cost of the car when I sell it, the repairs are on me.
Is that the in line water control valve? The one that is activated by vacuum? They want 157 dollars up here. I need one for my 84 as the diaphragm inside is leaking water and compromising the AC.
Yep, that's the one. Part no. 10120965 "Unit-heat". It's a pair of metal tubes that runs along the passenger side wheel well and has the valve built into it. Total with shipping and tax was $64.42 and it arrived in about 4 business days. Unfortunately they're in FL with me so I have to pay tax. Give them a call and ask for Jason like the website says.
