Hey guys,
I'm putting the motor back in today and the manual calls to take the lash out of the valves and tighten an additional turn.
How do I find TDC if I can't see the cylinder? Finding TDC on Cyl #1 won't be hard since the harmonic balancer has a mark on it, but how do I find TDC on the remaining 7?
Thanks in advance.
Joe
oh one more thing-- what's the best way to turn the motor? I have a harmonic balancer puller, should I attach that and spin it or is there a better way?
I hooked up the starter, saved a lot of time and knuckle ache.
The important thing is that the lifters need oil pressure to get a proper lash setting, so spin the pump every time you turn the motor. Two of mine ended up having to have the car running before I could get them properly set.
As for finding TDC, I turned the motor over until both lifters were closed, thats not necessarily TDC, but its the same thing for adjusting the lash.
I waited till the intake valve was nealy closed and put a screwdriver into the spark plug hole. Then I slowly continued turning the crank till the screwdriver moved. It served as a cheap piston stop.
You can buy a fixture that fits over the crank pulley bolt to facilitate turning the crank with a wrench, oh well maybe next time.
So long as there is oil in the pushrods and they are loose the lifters shouldn't collapse. There is a little spring that supports the piston inside the lifter and oil can run back down inside the pushrod as you release pressure on each lifter by backing off on all rocker arms before you start the adjustments.
