Torque Converter ???

Default Torque Converter ???

Winter project on a 94 A4 with 3.07 rear (street not strip), AI 200 head/cam package, Long tube headers, Trango hd2 kit etc... Now comes the question, what torque converter should I use and is a 2800 enough or too much?

Mainly for fun, not my daily driver, can use it for running around but usually use another car for short trips. Only plan to take it to the strip to see what it will do.

In short running the highways.

I have a converter that stalls at 3000. I actually bought a 2800 stall converter but with my increased torque form head and cam it stalls almost exactly at 3000. I installed the converter before I did anything to the car and it improved drivability over the stock converter just by itself. If you are considering a higher stall than 3000 I personally don't think you would like it. I have ridden in cars with 5000 stall converters and they do just fine but there is a noticeable slippage and if you live around hills or mountains you will get tired of engine reving and not going anywhere. Also, I am told that the higher the stall the higher the heat generated. I think a 2800 to 3000 converter would be perfect for all occasions.

I'm happy with my 2800 for the street. The only negative thing I see is that I have zero traction in wet weather from a stop. Not that I had much before. Other than that it's perfect. Leave the ASR on and be careful when it's raining. If you go too much higher you will have traction issues without slicks. I could definitely benefit from some drag radials at the track.

Mine is approx. 3000 to 3200 stall. I think it is great for a weekend car. I also have 3.07's. It will take some getting used to because it is a big change from the stock converter. I'm not used to seeing the engine at 2200 RPM's when driving at 20mph, but that's what it is, and it jumps to about 2800 when I go up a hill. I like it, but at first I thought something was wrong. The TPI is holding me back now with that converter but that is soon to change!!!! So yes, I think 2800 to 3200 would be your best bet. 2200 to 2600 for the daily drivers.
