the wallet is open to spend some bucks..i am looking for the best tire for taking offramps...i am talking max gforce. i have (or will have when i pick it up on sat) a 96 lt4. years ago i had a mustang and put yokahama a008rs around all 4 and it stuck like it was on rails. i got 5k miles from these tires and it was worth the price. i am looking for a street legal tire that is in the correct size for my vett 255 45 r 17 and 285 40 r 17. who makes the best bang for the buck when it comes to maximum dry weather adhesion. i dont care if i only get 5k miles i just dont want to get 500 miles like a pure track tire would get on the street.
what tire? brand/ model
where to buy them?
When tracking some C5 in a mountain "cruize" last year my GY Eagle HP Plus hung in there through the twisties.
The only down-side I noticed is that when the finally lose grip there is little in any warning...
However, this is an excellent strip, cruize, road tire and will continue to buy them so long as GY builds them...
Hoosier, Hankook, or some other dot-r. I would not run the small 255 tire up front if I wanted good cornering. FWIW I run Kumho MX on mine, street and road course use. Try some track driving, you can hardly drive the car hard on the street and if you find a place it doesn't last very long.
what size would you run up front? in the rear? thanks
Stock these cars have a lot of understeer, so a small front tire only makes this worse. You can run different sizes but it would be best to tune the rest of the suspension then to get the car neutral or close to it. Run the largest tires front and rear that will fit on your rim. I have some C5 thin spokes, I like the 275/35/18 MX on all four for those. If you run the dot-r on the street, be very very wary of water. I ran 285/40/17 on all four stock wheels as well. You can cram a larger tire on the 9.5" wheel if you can find someone willing to try. Keep an eye on the tires weight when you pick one and overall dia.
the 275/40 r 17 and 315 35 17 are a direct bolt on to the 96 collectors edition lt4 wheels? going from a 285 40 to a 315 35 isnt it going to buldge out on the sides?? i thought plus 1 sizing would be 295 35 r 17

These are still the best street tire I've ever had on my Vette. I won't say that there's not another true street tire that wouldn't cut a faster lap. Obviously, I have no way of knowing this since I haven't tried them all. But I've even used the Eagle F1 Supercars which are purported superior to the the GS D3s and I still liked the Kuhmos MXs better. What impressed me about them was their sure-footedness and predictability. Even at that fine line between maximum cornering speed and disaster, if they were wavering on the edge and began to go over it, recovery was quick and sure. They made me feel like a hero more than once.
In the waning stages of their life, they will harden and lose some adhesion, but then any tire will to some extent. I would think that some proper heat cycling when new would help with that, also as it would with any tire.

Unfortunately, they do not make a 295/35/17. In order to go w/ the 315's on the rear, you need to go w/ an 11" wheel...a la the Grandsport wheels (which I have on my car) - which are 9.5's up front & 11's on the rear.
CE wheels are 8.5" up front & 9.5's on the rear. The widest tire I'd put on a 9.5" wheel is a 285.
Nitto RII's. When I drove and raced on the same tire I use the Nitto RII and they are a really nice grippy dry weather tire. And 275's would be better.
good luck
Potenza RE 720 is a little bit superior in dry, F1 GS-D3 is a little bit superior on the wet.
In Europe we do not consider those ones as good tires. They are generaly in the middle of rank as good average tires.
If you want to impress with new autocross records, you should try the Falken FK 452, far better in all conditions (including wet) but expensive. Longevity is not good (10.000 miles) but it depends on how you drive your car.
I have Kumo's on my 96 vette, great tires for the money!!
I have the Kumho's on both my vettes!
Had the Goodyear before and I am very pleased with the Kumho's.
They seem like they are wearing better and seem to be a little stickier.
Also less noise from them. The goodyears were very loud on the c-5 and now I can actually carry on a conversation
