I jumped in the vette the other morning. Started fine, but no power steering. Hmmmm, I pop the hood and I see the serp belt had come undone. It was pouring so I figured I'd figure it out later..probably a pully seized or the tensioner let go. Looked at it today and found that the entire bracket that supports the Alt and Air pump had sheared off!!! Here are some pics..
What would cause this? I'll need to buy a new one. My FSM is packed away so what is this part called?
I had the same thing happen on my 90, but it was the ac compressor bracket. Funny thing is i never lost the belt! I ended up with a high rpm vibration, and thats how i found it!
I believe all stock pieces were there but I will double check. This thing sheared every mount point. The bottom of the alt was pulled apart. I'll have to search the archives for good alt recommendations. This is turning out more expensive then I had envisioned
I broke one a few years ago; my rear brace (home made) broke and I put off replaceing it a little too long... with similar results. Got a used one from Vette-To-Vette parts.
Thanks guys. Yeah, not sure how I could get the stock part to work. I'll try to fab (or have) something fabbed up.
if those are hookers the stock one won't work, you will have to make one. The stock one is intended to go to #1 cylinder 2nd bolt, w/hkr. headers that won't fit anymore. You will have to use the bolt before cylinder #3 and use an extension tube to clear the header. I made mine w/1/2" x1/16" wall mild steel tubing (see my pics). Not that big of a deal to make....just a little time and a few bucks for some steel tubing.
A lot of guys that install headers find that the support bracket that originally attached to the OEM exhaust manifold and the alt, just left it off. GM put it there for a reason.
