I have the distributor apart; shaft apart from gear, and am wondering what the perferred method for lubing the upper bearing area?
I'm temped to use some grease on it but my instinct tells me motor oil is the proper lube before assembly.

I used just a smear of oil on the shaft when assembling and some c.c. cam break-in lube on a new gear. The upper bushing has a small reservioir of yellow grease packed in around the bushing. My understanding is that it becomes "self lubricating" which occours from the operating temperatures allowing some transference of that heavy grease. I also spin the shaft on some "v" blocks w/an indicator first to make sure it is relatively straight (have seen a few that didn't even want to go through the bushings).
Is this yellow grease something I can get at GM and repack?
Repacking would be easy enough, but I am not sure if it is available seperately. That grease GM used/uses is very heavy and I'm not sure what weight/type would be a good substitute. When the pick-up asembly is screwed down it seals that area. I think if the grease is too light or too heavy, it may not work as intended. On new cases w/bushings, w/out shaft etc. it will already be there.
IMO, I would rather see it have some good ball bearings as a substitute for the bushings/grease. The last time I re-built mine I could not find an hei base set-up that way, so I opted for a new stock base.
