A moderately firm shift kit and a good tranny cooler can make a transmission last a long time. Don't install a shift kit to correct another problem already surfacing tho. If you have a good healthy trans then it is a good mod. Now that I have done it, I agree with aardwolf. It isn't overly difficult. A little time consuming if you take your time, but not bad. I did mine in about 5 hours. Probably could have done it in 3.5, a pro could have done it in about 2 tops. This was a B+M shift improver kit installed at the firmest shift level it offers. I don't know how long a B+M transpak would take to install or what other features it offers over the shift improver kit.

Can't you hold it in gear and shift it manually? It has been a long time since I had the factory trans, but I thought I always had that option.

RACE ON!!!

I don't know what the setting is for a Vette trans but most OE trans will upshift 1 -2 regardless of shifter position.
A shift kit does away with this and lets you hold a gear until the engine blows.
Also some trans won't downshift on demand above a certain speed.Shift kit over rides this also.

"Shift kits are more trouble than they are worth."
Why?

"The engineers at GM set the shift time and shift quality up the way they did for a reason "
So long as you want to drive like your grandmother I am sure you won't need a shift kit.

"unless you want to keep buying transmissions"
If you are "having to buy trans" on account of the shift kit , suggest you find a better trans builder.

I have had shift kits in every trans for 25 years and never had a problem. Some of us want the consistancy of a auto with a the ability to change gears like a stick. Both up and down
Different stroke for different folks.

NB:
Don't change the factory "engineered" cam or exhaust otherwise your engine will blow up.
Change the factory tires and you will wreck the suspension.
Hell ,better not change the factory color either just to be safe!

"You must have got lost on your way to fluff and fold section of the forum. This is the "C4 Tech/Performance" section."
