I asked this question on another thread and got no answer maybe I was hijacking so here it goes again. I'm using the comp cams 08-432-8 Hyd roller cam the machine shop said to use a brass gear and gave me a Mr. Gasket # 1044 gear I have a brand new melonised GM gear part # 10456413 sitting on my shelf. does anybody have an opinion on what one to use?
Personally, lets see, Mr. Gasket, ahh, let me think about it, GM gear, shoot yea. I won't even use Mr. Gasket header gaskets. To me its kinda like buying a universal tail pipe hanger.
My mechanic and fabricator (who built my whole car with me and I trust) recommended the GM melonized distributor gear to go with my ZZ9 roller cam after it ate the EOM gear, leaving me stranded on the highway ...thanks TPIS, for not warning me of this potential disaster, but anyway, some thought I should go with the brass, but I listened to my guy who said the melonized by GM is much better, and so far so good after a couple of thousand miles.
From what I understand the brass is softer material.
The brass is a lot softer and probably costs one third to make, not to mention as the cam gear remachines the brass all of the material is circulated through out oiling system.
i would use the gm melonized gear no matter what cam i was running .but what i don't get is why the machine shop recommended you run a brass gear? the brass gear is for a billet steel cam but all comp cams hyd rollers have a cast dist gear pressed on before machining. so you can run a stock type dist gear .gm only sells one gear and it the melonized gear.i would not run a brass gear unless you like replacing it every few months and having brass go through you engine.
