Rough Idle
I have an 86 (automatic) with a new engine (under 1,000 miles). Idle speed is at 600 rpm but when in gear (like at a stop light) the idle is very rough. Put the shift in park and the idle smooths out. I'm told there's no way to adjust the idle because the ECM handles it. Is that true? There's no way to adjust the idle? And if it is, does anyone know where I would start to smooth out the idle while in gear? I've put in new plugs, new spark plug wires, new distributor and timing has been set twice. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is a procedure to set the base idle. A search of this forum should find it for you.
When you shift to park, what is the RPM at?
Is the idle perfectly smooth in park or is it just better?

Thanks I'll do a search. RPM stays at 600 when I shift to park and idles "better". Very rarely get a "miss" in park. Just when it's under a "load" like in drive. I guess I just expected more.
