I did like the book said: removed the little button cover thing (the thing that shows the 1-2-3-4-R-OD), removed the 't' rod, and I then tried to 'unscrew' or twist it off of the shifter but it wouldn't give... what am I missing?
I wanna replace it with a normal **** and relocate the OD button and I also wanna replace my shifter boot, but to do those things I gotta get that little SOB outa there first :yesnod:
Yeah, I know. I figured I could just get a new momentary switch... or is that a rare piece?
Well the ACTUAL switch that mounts inside the shifter is one of two peices of the 4+3 still available from GM. It is like $54 though. The 2nd piece is the shift pattern button. Any "normal" 2 wire momentary switch should work fine for you though if you are remounting it elsewhere. :)
Yeah, I'd probably just put it where it would be in an '84...
I thought about buying a shift **** and drilling out the top to accept the button and the switch. and then I came to my senses
I'd really like to have a brushed aluminum **** like the C5 ***** Ecklers has :yesnod: but I gotta get this monkey offa there first and it wont budge :(

The problem is trying to find a decent 84 or early 85 center console. Nobody sells new ones. Only the junkyards have them. :( Trust me... I've been trying to think of possibilities for when my shiftknob finally goes south. :yesnod:

Actually, I had planned on hacking up my '87 panel :)
After unscrewing the T-rod, use a small pliers to pull out the little square plastic tray. Underneath it there is one screw that needs to come off before you can pull out the shift ****. Once the **** is out, the boot comes out from the top.

On my 4+3, as I remember, after removing the plastic button, removing the long "t" rod, there was a "wedge" looking part that sat between the shift lever and ****. Its lodged in there pretty well; after removing it, I could unscrew the **** off the shift lever. Hope this helps. :flag
I finally got the **** off: there was this metal thing that's maybe a little bit shy of an inch long that I had to pull out with pliers and then I was able to twist the **** off. I now understand why the thing was so loose... it must have been off before and not tightened back correctly. There were no screws though... <shrug>
