Here's one for you gurus out there. When I first turn the key to "ON",the upshift arrow lights, and the word "UPSHIFT",and the phrase"FOR BEST ECONOMY".But when I'm driving, sometimes just the arrow and "UPSHIFT" comes on,and sometimes the "FOR BEST ECONOMY"also lights, but not always. What's with that? They obviously must operate independently. What triggers them? The owners manual isn't much help, and neither is the FSM.If it's in there somewhere,it must be on one of those"BLANK" pages.
That's what I thought,it's a stumper.I would think JFB would have jumped on this one. This glitch isn't the end of life as we know it,just a little mystery.Car runs and drives great.
I might be wrong and if I am I apologize in advance but it sounds like whats happening is that since all digital dash clusters are made with the same features, the upshift indicator is there for cars equipped with the 4+3 and not the auto. Kind of like the ABS light. Your car may not HAVE them but they are incorporated into ALL the dash clusters rather then make a hundred different ones.
I just sold my '86 Z51, but with the stock computer chip only the "upshift" part of the writing would illuminate when shifting 99.999% of the time. IIRC, the "For best economy" would come on occasionally also, but I never could figure out why it did only very occasionally.
Direct quote from my 87 owners manual.
Automatic Transmissions
In Corvettes equiped with automatic transmissions the UPSHIFT light is used primarily as a reminder to shift to overdrive. The light will go on if the car is operated in "cruise" conditions above 40 MPH in "D","2" or"1" for 30 seconds. The light will gout when the transmission shifts into Overdrive or a hard acceleration is made.
The "UPSHIFT" light goes on immediately if excessive engine speeds are detected in a lower gear, This is to alert the driver that the shifter is in a lower gear and should be upshifted.
The "UPSHIFT" light may flash on momentarily during automatic upshifts at full throttle. This is considered normal.

That is exactly word for word what my owners manual says. But where does it say "FOR BETTER ECONOMY" will come on,other then on "KEY ON"
Is this a road speed to tach ratio or what? I know what triggers the the "UPSHIFT" light. But what makes the rest of the words light up?
