Re: This thing is SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (JD 90 383)
...I Can only imagine what that thing must sound like....
it actually didn't sound that bad at idle. but once he got on the gas, there was nothing other than the twin turbos keeping the noise down. i could hear him a good 100 yards away when he was just putting along in the parking lot.
on the road, he blew by me on I-96 on the way back from lunch. made my stock 92 feel like a Cavalier trying to catch up. the thing sounded SWEET with the turbos under load. kinda reminded me of KITT in Knight Rider, except John's car is faster...
I was talking with Jeff D'Agostino at Fast Times Motorworks this morning - he's co-owner along with Chuck Samuels who was mentioned in that PHR article - and he said John Meaney told him that he wished he had gone with larger turbo's. Precision Turbo told me that John is using a pair of their PT-52 turbo's, which are good for about 600hp each - they are commonly used as replacement on turbo Buicks. Jeff is going to call John for me and find out which turbo's he'd go with now if he could do it over again, and if he'd do anything else differently.
My car is scheduled to go to TRZ Motorsports the first week of January to have headers, exhaust, intercooler, and all the associated plumbing fabricated and installed. He said it would take them about 2-3 weeks, so by the time the Chicago winter is clearing up, it should be back on the road.
Does anybody else fail to see the point of stuffing 1300 horsepower into a stock C4? Don't get me wrong, that motor is amazing, but a stock chassis? Stock suspension? No wonder it only runs 11s. I love big horsepower, but the car's a frankenstein.
Re: This thing is SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Jim85IROC)
It may only run 11's, but it does do over 151 mph in the 1/4. It does the second 1/8 mile in less than 3 seconds! Regardless of what it does in the 1/4, it's a daily driver.
The really sick thing is there are more of them out there you don't know about. It is actually fairly cheap to build one considering. And for those that don't know John Meany, he is one of the guys that designed DFI. Mike Moran built his engine which not many of us can afford that. However you can take a 350 stock 4bolt block and pull 1300hp out of it. You need a good crank and rods and a set of 7.5:1 Ross racing pistons. Nice set of Canfield heads and a SR up top with DFI. Call Turbonetics and order two 60-1 HI-FI turbos along with the 2 Race gates. Then you can call Kooks Custom Headers to fab everything along with the intercooler. Under 20K and you have something faster than any tuner will ever get you. I should know cause we are building on now. However with the way things are looking and my wife finally finding out where I have been spending my money it looks like it won't be finished for another year.

This is on a Michelin Pilot, I would imagine if he could have gotten more than 2 runs he would have been well into the 10's.....With Drag radials and practcie Im sure he could see 9's IMPRESSIVE AS HELL. On an ET Street Im sure that car is capable of 8's if he gets the MPH close to 160 with a halfway decent launch. :)
Can we say winner ?? This is good example pf smallblock potentiality. These days there is no need for megabig engines with stoneaged huffers to make big power and driveability!!!
Alot of it depends on the materials you use and who's doing it.
We're using .069" 321 stainless steel for my headers, which besides Iconel is one of the most expensive materials you can use that are applicable to the high heat of a turbo system. However, it pays dividends in that the pipes and planges are more durable and resistant to warpage and fatigue. We're using CNC cut 7/16" thick headers flanges. The materials alone cost about $3000.
The cost for the turbo's varies, depending on size, quality, and brand. The turbo's used on John Meaney's C4 featured in Popular Hot Rodding that everyone is talking about are Precision Turbo and Engine PT-52's. They're basically Turbo Buick replacements and go for about $675 each. Larger 60 series turbo's go for about $1000 each. Wastegates generally go for about $350-$450 each. Intercoolers vary, depending on whether you get a 'universal' core or have one custom built for your particular applicaiton and chassis. I'm going with a custom intercooler built from Spearco cores and it's going to cost around $2000, but it will be adequately sized and fit for my car. If you have the room for a 'universal' one, you can get them for less than half that.
All in all, I was quoted $12,000 to $14,000 by TRZ Motorsports, which is widely considered one of the top chassis and fabrication shops in the NMCA/NSCA/NMRA circles, especially for turbo setups.
I was talking to a local chassis guy yesterday where I get some basic stuff done, like fuel tank sumps, driveshaft loops, etc and he said he could easily beat that price. However, he doesn't have as much experience in doing it. The way I look at it is that even to go with a lesser experienced guy is still gonna cost about $9000 or more, it's better to spend the extra money and be sure it done right and done by someone who has the experience necessary. TRZ is known for doing beautiful, show quality work, even on racecars, and that's somewhat of a consideration for me. I figure if I'm spending that kind of money, I want it to look as good as it performs.

I sure see the point of a daily driver that can chew up and spit out anything on the street and surprise the hell out of 'em while doing it. I love my small road victories in my stock 87; I can only imagine the pure glee of this Frankenvette. Hoo hah! :chevy
