The oring MSD sends is too small in ID and has to be stretched but the lip on the opti base is too short to hold it especially when the base is down there vertically on the engine. It will drive you mad if you try to use it. They also now send out a square cross section gasket ring like an oil filter seal. If you don't want to use either of these go to your local oring supplier and ask for a Parker O-ring #2-162 which is 5.737" ID x .103" thick. Give it a little stretch and coat it with a thin layer of silicone grease to help hold it in position while you put the cap on. Still be careful since it is almost impossible to see the bottom edge of the opti when putting the cap on.
Thanks for the Parker p/n, Ron. I did seat the supplied oring on my MSD but, what a pain. I actually used masking tape to hold it in place until the cap was almost tight then pulled the tape.
Yea, lame is correct. Another lame story: If you get a unit for your 92, the wiring plug won't work. You have to hardwire it, no big deal, but the lame part is that nowwhere in the instructions or on thw website does MSD tell you this.
f anyone's doing a 92 and needs the wiring, I have it.
I've not used the MSD, but I recently read their instruction manual. It says that the O-ring they supply needs to be stretched over the housing then allowed to shrink to fit. Are you saying that once it is stretched it does not shrink?
Oh it shrinks all right, it shrinks enough in 5 seconds to pop back off the housing. I streached one to about 2 feet and it still wouldn't stay in place.
Glad MSD decided to fix this.
