87 console lock problem

87 console lock problem
I need to replace/repair my center console lock..on my 87
In the lock mode it can still be opened..so it's NOT secure !!!
Anyone know an easy way to tighten the lock assembly without removing the console ???
There is a cover on the inside of the console over the lock assembly..does it snap off ??
I have broken a lot of things and don't want to add another one to the list..
