If the fork was rubbing on the pressure plate (loose pivot stud or bent fork) then it'd be more of a scraping noise and get really nasty when you pushed the pedal further.
I think it's a bad throwout bearing that chews on itself when you put force on it. It might get louder from being in the echoey bellhousing.
As mentioned, either way you have to pull it apart.

That's a little different than what I experienced. As Central Coaster put it, mine was more "scraping". What I really noticed was that it seemed that your rpm's dropped when you pushed the pedal in. I guess it's time for exploratory surgery.
