Default Climate Control Issue

My 87a4 has the automatic climate control option. Yesterday it went nuts. It seems that it cannot properly regulate the temperature and waffles back and forth between AC and heat (both at the highest fan speed). This is regardless of the setting (defrost, heat, auto, etc,). The Economy setting, which used to blow only ambient air (no heat, no a/c) now blows hot air or ambient air, waffling like the other settings. I'd appriciate any ideas on how to fix this.

Some can be fixed by unplugging the rear connector and using a Q tip and electrical contact cleaner, wipe all of the pins on the connector and plug back in and see if it is better. If not, you can take the control apart and do the same thing for the contacts on the circuit board. If this doesn't help, then its time to replace the control head, you can swap yours for a rebuild. I did it recently.

Let's verify if the blend door is moving.
Under the hood, do this:

Turn the engine on, put the temp to 90 or to the lowest number ( I forget, I think it's 60?).
Then, have someone adjust the temp all the way up(or all the way down) and look thru the hole down into the cavity.

You will want to see if this door:

is moving at all.

*note: the air cavity/cowling box has been removed in that pic for better visual of the door. Don't take apart your cowling.

Report back what you find.

Nice pics, Paul. I've only had the pleasure of seeing the blend door from the other side.

Checking in to see the progress on this thread.

I've got the same problem with my '96. C-68 climate control - can't maintain constant temp.

I can see that my blend door can move when the temp is modulated, but it tends to just move a few degrees back and forth. This is accompanied by a very audible straining type noise that sounds like 2 plastic plastic pieces trying to move. Have you ever seen this happen? Solution?

Sorry to jump into this thread with my question, I don't intend to hijack this thread and can start a new one if needed - but this is the best infomation I've seen on this frustrating problem.
