thats' the "Check Engine Light" as many other cars call it. It means your CCM has thrown a code, and you need to find out what's wrong. HERE is a forum thread detailing how to use your own car's diagnostic mode to find the code. Hope all ends well!

Default Service engine soon

I'll share my experience with "service engine soon"
Bought my 87 in mar of 94, 22,000 mi.Driving home from purchase SES light came on. Car runs great! Never did throw a code!!!!!Changed the ECM (electronic control module)still no fix.Long story short 13 years later SES still blinks on about 40% of the time, someone said there are 2 relays from ECM to dash and they could be faulty.Sold the car with a full explanation of light and 5 attempted diagnostics with no code evident.Pretty flakey electronics I'd say??!!

The "service engine soon" light (MIL, malfunction indicator lamp) is driven by the PCM and is a indication that it has a code present in it. The CCM codes are indicated by the lower portion of the speedometer indicator where the info is displayed. The CCM basically monitors the chassis and rest of car systems (but not brake systems) .

The PCM is module 4. This will be displayed when pins 4 & 12 are connected together which will put it in the diagnostic mode. Once in the diagnostic mode, you can use this website for code identification. This is only for module 4, the PCM (power control module), which is for engine and transmission codes.
