Default 89 Engine shut down

I'm jumping forums to help a friend with an automatic 89. My experience is with the C3's only.
The problems started like this:
Engine idling in gear, fluctuating between 600-800 RPM.
Runs smooth to 85 MPH, but starts "sputtering" at 94 MPH.
If you accelerate to 65 MPH and then "kick" it in, the engine shuts down. Pull over and stop, and it starts right up.
Items that were checked:
Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAFS)

Items that were replaced:
Fuel Filter
Gasoline
AUC( ? ) I am not familiar with this
acronym.Maybe I am misstating the correct name.

The problem is now getting worse. If you just "get on it" mildly
the engine shuts off, but will still start right back up.

No codes are apparrent. I have searched some similar threads
and just to get ahead of it a little I should probably check fuel pressure during shut down, wiring harnesses, and try "tapping" on the ECU and note any performance changes. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

If he can put on a fuel gauge that can be taped onto the windshield, it might shed some light.
Also, the 89 injectors are junk. Lots of info in the archives, about them.

Sounds like the ignition module(in the distributor) to me. It cured my 89 from dying for no reason.

Do you know anyone that has a hand held scanner? that would be your best bet, have someone drive and someone look at the scanner.

Well yes a defective ignition module can cause it to shut down out of the blue, but I have a feeling it could be the injectors or bad fuel pressure. From what he's describing when he gives it the beans, the car cant keep going. I would check the fuel pressure first.

Check the resistance of your injectors when the engine is cold and hot. Post your results and lets go from there!

Merry Christmas!
