How much value is a AutoXray EZLink Scan Tool ?
Just was wonderin' as the car becomes a hobby, is it worthwhile if you're not much of a mechanic ?

If you want to understand your motor get some books on TPI/EFI and the scan tool. At $65/hr shop rates it won't take long to pay back. The EZlink allows you to download data onto your PC which is a real benefit.
I've used std AutoXray to find a false knock condition, set base timing, set the TPS, and check AFPR tuning at WOT. Plus it's a great learning tool.

I did see a decent one at Barnes and Noble, but the title escapes me. I'll have to stop back.

I like "Chevy TPI Fuel Injection Swapper's Guide" by John Baechtel and "How to Tune and Modify Chevrolet Fuel Injection" by Ben Watson. I believe both are available at http://www.amazon.com/ at about $15-$18.

No replacement for a genuine GM Service manual from Helm. Best $100 (Or less if you get lucky on Ebay) you'll ever spend on your car. That coupled with an Auto X-Ray is a great combination.

If you want to understand the ECM and what it does, how it works, how the sensors feed back to it, and a few other Corvette Only quirks, "Corvette Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Management" by the late Charles Probst came out in 2001. The only problems I see with it are a few things I characterize as crossover problems...electrical schematics for an 85 are grouped with an 86 (which have different MAF burnoff circuits, etc). Basically, I have seen this type of problems in all books. SOmeone always publishes a wrong part number or schematic. Anyway, my father picked it up for me as a gift--I am guessing Barnes and Noble. 400 pages, 250 not including the schematics. -Matt-

Do you have any experience with the Probst book on EFI and Electronic Engine management ?
