Default Speedometer just died, help!

Hey guys,
I just had the ring and pinion changed out on my 92 auto. Went from the 2.59 to a Strange 3.54. Very nice change by the way. They did change the speedo gears. Everything seemed fine. After about 100 miles all of a sudden the speedometer drops to 0 mph and doesn't register anymore. As soon as it happened it also turned on the SES light.
Mechanically the car seems fine. No noises, leaks, all fluids check out.
All my other gauges are working properly.
Can anyone help with this?

Thanks bogus. That is what was wrong. It was because they left my original speed sensor in there but the right drive/driven gears.

I got a hold of 18carfan (Jeff Kopp) and he got me straight on the right GM parts and explained it all to me. And did a great job! Thanks Jeff for all your help. I know exactly what and why now and it will be fixed by next week.

On the other side of the change though I'm really happy with the new gears. Only got a 150 miles on them so I'm behaving. But I could tell the difference immediately even at low rpms. Definetely worth it even with this minor oops getting the job done...

Make sure the plastic gears are ok. If the sensor is not seated in the case properly it will chew up the gear.

Food for thought. If you changed the drive gear in the tranny, sometimes they are a tight fit. If the tech who installed did not correct this, the gear will split at the key and not turn with the shaft. If the gear is tight on the shaft when you install it, you need to lightly sand so that it is a nice slide fit. Otherwise, the gear will be in a high state of internal tension and will crack at the stress concentration, i.e., the key. When you change the VSS, look inside and verify the drive gear is OK.

Thanks I'll cut and paste this info to bring with me and let them know. Because they owe me doing the labor I'm tempted to just make him take the tail off and show me the driven gear to make sure it isn't chewed up, split, or worn badly. I don't want to find out it's worn down enough that it will work for a couple of months and then go. Then I'll the labor of having it done!
