Everything I read indicates the D36 will break with lower gears. Will it be safe for the street?
I do not plan to take it to the track. Anyone out there do a gear change with a D36 and hasn't broke? Seems like gears are the best bang for the buck! I just don't want that Big bang to happen.
D44 is just to expensive for me! I just want to have my D36 set up!
My d33 has 3.73 with 2400stall and I have 315 Nitto drag radial which at the track Ive lowerd psi down to 20 and still I couldnt bust it. I might be one of the lucky few. I would say your fine for street use. DO IT! Dont forget to correct the speedo gear.

I have a D36 with 3.54 gears. No problems hear. My car goes to the track a couple times a year, but is primarily a toy, weekend cruiser. Torque is what can cause problems for a D36. A higher stall and some sticky tires can break it. With a stock converter and street tires it should be fine.
I also have a D36 with 3.54 (originaly it was a 2.59) I have never been nice to it and it still works fine I have about 6,000 hard miles on it now But I am trying to blow it up so I can justify putting a D44 in it so it will probably last forever
I am running 360rwhp with a ZF6 tranny with my D36 along with a 3.73 ring and pinion. I had the ring and pinion installed a couple of years ago, but we also rebuilt the unit with new bearings, etc. I take mine to the track and run it hard on the street with now problems (so far), but I run street tires. With drag radials and hard launches, some run into problems eventually especially at higher power levels.
Thats good to hear. I've gotten 1.86-1.88s on street tires and when I saw the time slips I got a little worried about the rear end. Consistently cuts 1.92-1.96 60s, which is pretty good on street tires, IMHO.
