Default That Service Engine Soon light!

All,

I've looked through the historical threads and couldn't find anything . . .

My Service Engine Soon light comes on after about 1 mi. and stays on for 2-3 mi. Then it disappears. Occasionally it comes back on, but not often.

Any thoughts on this behavior from you experts?

Regards,
Hal

My first check would be gas cap after that the o2 sensor. Most common. Pull the codes to see if anything is out of the ordinary.

Default Not sure this will help ya, but.....

The owner before me removed the cats and installed straight pipes back to the mufflers. he told me that the "service engine soon" light would come on after about an hour of easy driving. He said something about the oxygen sensor being removed and that was what causes the light to come on.

Pull any stored codes first. These links will help you if needed:

http://www.corvettebuyers.com/c4vettes/codes.htm

http://www.corvettebuyers.com/c4vettes/ecm.htm

That should narrow it down. My gut tells me you've got an O-sensor issue

pull the codes. If it isn't an O2 sensor, as others have said, the number 2 culprit is the EGR valve, code 32 I believe. Good luck.

Always good to state the year first. Yours is a 94, so I'm not sure if it has an EGR switch, but my 87 did the same thing and it turned out to be the EGR switch. Easier and cheaper than the EGR valve.

For the 94, connect 4 and 12 on the ALDL connector. Then turn key on (dont start) and it will run thru all the modules. Watch for module 4 which is the PCM codes, if any. Recycle key to see again.

Check this page for PCM codes for a 94.

http://www.corvettedoctor.com/1994_96_DTC_Codes.html

BTW – the EGR relay will throw a code, but the EGR valve will not (only vacuum operated).

mine comes on and stays off for a long time. i finnaly took it to auto zone so they could scan it. comes out to be one of the 02 sensors. it don't cost you anything to scan. they can tell you what the code is and it gives you the location of the problem

Please fill out your profile so all can communicate better and respond more accurately with you.

Have you changed the O2 sensor and did it repair the problem?

Yes you can go to A/Z and get the codes scanned, but the on board diagnostics is very good and will give you the same information right from your driveway. Unless you just want the assistance of A/Z and that would be a different story.

Are you running with no o2 sensor? If so the system will never go closed loop and your wasting a lot of gas.Just removing the cats should leave the sensor in place.
