OK. At the risk of sounding like an idiot, for the brakes on the front of our cars (mine being an 95 LT1 with the HD brakes)... there's the guide pin at the bottom riding on the bottoms of the calipers... is there supposed to be a clip, or anything for that manner, at the top of the pads? I ask, because I honestly did not have anything there when I bought the car, and the pads I bought did not include any hardware for the top.
There's no pin at the top. You'll see when you are changing out the pads how they wedge in there. I was pleasantly surprised when I did my first brake job at how little has to come off to swap pads.
so just the guide pin at the bottom, and that's it? I always wondered why the pads had an extra hole at the top. I thought maybe a clip or pin went there.
It is common that many pads and even shoes have holes and cut outs that might have multiple uses, or mean absolutely nothing. Just use the pads as required for that brake system and all will be fine.
It's when you have left over parts that……. could be a problem.
You can't just clean up the original pin and throw some hi-temp brake grease on it? Isn't it just for keeping the pads in-line?
A new pin is always better, if you see any wear on the pin; replace it. I use the J55's on my track driven LT1 and I do 10+ pad changes a year, my budget is rather slim; I have used the same pins for the last two years without any problems.
i was gonna say, does it even move that much? I don't think it had wear lines or anything on it. I will find out soon though again, I participated in that group buy of the rotors & pads.

The brake dust is very abrasive and there is slight movement of the pads as they float.
