Can the VATS system be armed and disarmed by replacing the key chip (resistor) with a switch?
Instead of having the key with the resistor allowing the car to start can it be done through a manual or electrical switch.
I am asking because my car is a 96 and seems to have the VATS system bypassed because it turns on with a regular key.
Since it has the anti theft system can I activate it and deactivate it with a switch or a relay that requires some other electrical device in the car to be on for the car to start?
Yes it can be done with a switch in line with the stock wiring using the pellet in the key or you can disable the key and purchase the proper resistor and wire in a switch.
If you measure the resistance of the pellet in the key you can wire in a similar resistor in the circuit and by using a switch...bypass the VATS. I believe some of the Vette part sellers have this bypass switch kit. Most remote start systems require this bypass to be wired in so the car will start remotely without the key. I have 14 of the 15 possible resistors left from my remote start system.
