Default Starter R/R

I think my starter is ng. I sounds like its scraping the fly wheel.

Does it come out easy or do i have to loosen exhaust?

thx

When I did ours, has the exhaust down as I was pulling the tranny, so not sure.

However, per the 94 FSM, it's just 6 easy steps, remove or disconnect:
1. negative battery cable at battery -- 11 INCH lbs
2. raise vehicle
3. positive vattery cable from starter motor -- 13 lb ft
4. 'S' terminal from starter motor -- 35 INCH lbs
5. starter motor mounting bolts (2) --- 34 lb ft
6. starter motor, sealer, and shim(s) from vehicle.

However, you mentioned the scraping noise. Any chance it was installed without the shims/proper shims and just needs them to stop the scraping noise?

Per the 94 FSM, The gap between the flywheel tooth and the center low point between two teeth on the starter is 0.5 mm (0.020 in).

There can be long (covers both bolts) or short (only 1 bolt) shims.

My father & I struggled with this for a while on my '96, and for a time thought that loosening the exhaust would be necessary. It is not, and once you figure out how to access the outermost bolt above the cat, removal is not too bad.

There is no room to approach the bolt head from below, so the trick is to get the socket by itself into the small area below the bolt and above the cat & starter body. With the help of a screwdriver, I was able to get the socket onto the bolt and then attach an extension. Upon installation, you can do the same thing but it takes a little more patience.

Also, the stock starter has a rubber seal to fill the gap in front of the flywheel cover. Your replacement might not. (I got a rebuilt unit for far less than a Delco. Maybe those still come with a seal installed.) The OEM seal is discontinued, and a dealer parts dept. told me that they are not considered necessary anymore.

The gap was almost 1/8" on mine so I wasn't comfortable leaving it that way. I chose to make a new seal from some gasket material.

I did not have to loosen anything. It does not look like it, but it will slip out and clear all. When I got mine out I noticed the size was a bit smaller than I expected as compaired to other starters I have replaced. So do the simple first and see if that works for you.

Depends on what youve got
On the LT5 it is on top of the engine in the V and a PITA to replace
