OK- 700r4- I love it when it works... only problem is it never works. I was just wondering if its possible or if anyone has done this, but I would like to replace my 700r4 with a different trans... any ideas?

There are several different transmissions you could replace it with, all will cost more then fixing your problem. What is wrong with it?

...well, I guess that solves my question then...
I have to replace the torque converter- it seems to get chewed up quickly- I have to replace the valve body- I need a new front pump or entire new case- and new t/v cable & bracket... I think thats it (had new steels and clutches put in about 3 months ago)... something kills it quickly and I'm losin my mind- I'm on my 3rd torque converter in the last year

My first guess would be heat, either from an incorrectly adjusted TV cable or from a misfuctioning torque converter lock up. If the same people have been working on it, they are the cause of the problems. Replace the valve body??? Case???

I do not know how good with cars you are so I suppose there could even be a leak and it runs out of fluid. What have you checked?

The shop that rebuilt it should have given you a warrenty, you mentioned seals and clutches, what did they say when it broke?

It sounds like you are getting taken for a ride and not holding anyone accountable.

You could put a trans temp gauge on it, it is not tough or expensive, that way you could see the temp.

Thanks- good idea-

no leaks- I've taken her out every time- I sent it to a friend of a friend that works at aamco- took it apart in mins in front of me- I think he bummed the steels and clutches from work- told me the case on the inside of the f.pump walls were worn out- he told me I needed a new valve body- or a valve body rebuild to match the shift kit installed by previous owner (tighter springs I guess)

When I first bought the car- I took it to the strip- made three runs and by the time I made it home the converter siezed up on me- I replaced it... 3-4 months later- the converter completely let loose- I replaced it and had that guy open it up for inspection- new steels and clutches...
3-4 months since- startin to make the same noise it made before, each time the converter went out...

TH-350 or 400 will work but thats more of a downgrade in terms of economy (only got 3 gears man!). Maybe Pete K can help you out with fixing yours.

You can check to make sure the converter is locking up real easy. At a steady cruise hold the gas steady then lightly apply the brakes. The RPM should come up. For example at 50 MPH applying the brake should bring the RPM up 200 RPM as the converter unlocks.

I put a shift kit in mine with different springs for under $30. I did not need a new valve body, just some springs are changed.

I have hade this problem for a while and am on my third iteration of this trans. First I got rooked by an ebay transmission for $900, Then a local shop for $1400 with a converter. Finally in a sadistic third attempt I have a max performance transmission, good for over 1000 hp and I bought a full on lockup converter with anti balooning for future nitrous from TCS out of Ariz. There is ridiculus money on this attempt. The next best option would be to get a kit to make a 350 turbo the same legnth as a 700 and use the 700 tail housing. The cost would be much less however you will sacrifice OD. The reliability is much greater and repair is more mainstream. I wanted 4 gears so I have stuck with it but in retrospect I could have saved alot of money and driven alot more with a 350.

Pete K can hook you up. He has done several for Forum guys and I have never seen a complaint. He has even sent a couple to Europe. Not many guys would do that for somebody posting on the internet.

Even if you put a 350 in your car you will have to put a 700r4 pump in it ,that is the only strong one on the market that I know of for the
th350.
Try these guys ,I got a lot of good parts from them ,I pump almost a 1000 hp through my 700r4 but mine is a manuel valve body.It is like having a 4 speed with out the clutch.

If you are making less than 600 ft lbs and less than 550 hp (at the flywheel) you need a different builder. I have mildly modded 700"s behind 11 second cars wth minimal parts upgrades, but blueprinted well. My own car is in the 10's on spray.
Behind serious power they become tricky to build up well, but on mild stuff, most builders can do a good job for not a ton of money. I have always said that the guy building them is more important than the parts you toss in them.
Go to your local dragstrip and find the guys that run a 700 hard. Ask them where they go, and persue a builder from there.

If I were you I would get with Pete K you are too close in distance not to .I would have him build you a trans. It's not the builder it is the care ,and Pete takes the cake from what I have heard
I would let him build mine if I didn't break them so much.

I bought a factory remanufactured GM Goodwrench 700R for $1300.00 and had the Transgo Shift Kit installed. Works great, shifts hard, no leaks no problems for 3 years. I love that 2nd gear chirp.

TCI makes a valve body conversion that keeps constant 200 psi on the trans so you can adjust your throttle cable anyway you want and your trans will not burn up.Throttle cable maladjustment is the number one killer of these transmissions.Price is $240 from summit.
