I have the oddest clanging noise. It's coming from what SOUNDS like my bellhousing. I have perfectly fine oil pressure, and the clanging isn't in any sort of real rythm. At idle it's like, clang.......clang...clang..clang........ clang, but not very loud. Then when I rev it up, it's louder and seems to get a faster pace. Any ideas? I'm thinking a bolt came out of my flexplate, or torque converter bolt came out, or something along those lines. Any ideas?
P.S.- The car that's doing this is my 75 Chevy truck. It has a 350cid/TH350 tranny.
Re: Weird Clanging noise; Rod knocking? (TIMSPEED)
Probably not a loose bolt because that would just fall to the bottom of the bellhousing and sit (unless you have a large dia convertor that hits it all the time) If it is coming from the bellhousing area, I once blew up a ford torque convertor on a previous car over revving it and it made a lot of irregular clanging noise.....could this be it? You may have broken something in the convertor.
BTW, how does the car run?
You could check for loose convertor bolts by removing the dust cover. I think the 350's had a pretty large sized cover? Just rotate the convertor with a crow bar or long scredriver to check them all.
Re: Weird Clanging noise; Rod knocking? (TIMSPEED)
I had a mystery clang from what seemed to be the oil or trans pan at idle. It turned out to be precat material rattling around in the exhaust. Eventually, it made its way downstream and fouled the main cat leading to replacement. This happens often on aging L98s.
