I got a 1984 corvette that I just started today. Started up fine but some of the electrical does not work. The horn doesnt work, the speed ometer doesnt work, the stereo doesnt work either. The only thing weird is the blinkers work on the screen, the speakers make a weird noise real quick when the volume is turned up, and when you turn the key and the car is off the check engine light comes on and the buckle seat belt comes on. What could it be?
Work on the most important problems first. The best book/s you can get are the GM field service manuals. Be sure to get the electrical diagnosis service manual supplement (if there is one for the 84). I found Gordon's book on the cluster to not be very worthwhile. I would prefer a circuit diagram and an explanation of the individual circuits like the el. diagnosis book, but GM does not offer such.
You can jump 12v to the horn to see if it works. Check the horn relay by grounding the black wire from the relay which turns the relay on and the horns should sound.
The speedometer gets pulses from the speed sensor on the tailshaft of the transmission. If it outputs pulses, then the problem is in the cluster. There are a number of places that work on clusters.
The radio and speaker amplifiers can be sent out for repair, like to Doctor Don's.
Turning the ign on without starting the engine normally has the check engine light and seat belt light come on.
I don't know what you mean by the blinkers working on the screen.
