How much hp or torque can the stock connecting rods hold? My mechanic suggested that if I put some NO2 on my car , that I should put stronger rods in it. It's built with stock LT1 rods right now.
The rods will be just fine the thing you have to worrie about is the pistons because a stock piston cant take more then 100 to 125 shot if you go much over that you could hurt them.
The rods will go if you turn a lot of RPM and for a long time and if a rod bearing goes and lock-ups the crank and the rod.
At what point does one need to change rods then? Only when they break?
When you decide to go past the rpm limit of the rods. You don't want to break rods. You'll spin bearings if your lucky. Add some new openings to your block if your unlucky.
LT1 rods are safe (some margin for error) to about 6000 rpm. GM went to powdered metal rods in the late LT1s (95) and LT4. LT4 rpm limit is 6400. A lot guys, who haven't had a rod or other internal engine part fail, will tell you that you can go higher. Those of us who have had internal parts fail will tell you to stay on the conservative side.
