I have a 86' with a 88' 383 C.I. engine in it. I'm having trouble getting a after market chip just right (theres a Formato's chip in it now). I believe it should be done on a dyno, but being an old mass air flow car no one can use their dyno's. My next step is to go with a DFI. I was wondering what kind people are using, and how they like them?
Thanks,
Joe
It is a great system. However you have to know and understand the sensor display's in order to tune it. The new Gen7 is a little easier to tune thane the 6.0 box. However both systems are great and you can't beat them in what they are capable of campared to a custom chip.
Thank you,
I take it that you are talking about the new Accel 7 system? Have you heard anything about the fast trac system? The place that will install it for me uses both, but preferes the fast trac. I think fast trac use to be speed pro?
Joe
I been running the dfi for about two years no problems it will adjust for any motor combo that you have. You can log to the hard drive then look at it make adjustments and drive it again keep changing till you get it right. This winter I plan on adding power to my engine with some new mods all I will have to do is retune it not screw around burning chips. You can make adjustments while driving the car it also can turn on the nitrous for you and automatically increase the fuel.Only drawback is you need to have understanding of what to do takes some time to get it right but probably cheaper in the long run if I had to burn a chip ever time that I have changed mine it would have cost $10:000.00 by now. :) :seeya
Thats the system I was talking about, I spelled it wrong, When I said fast trac. This shop has been installing them for quite some time and love them. I don't know when the wide band O2 came with it but this one has it. They like it better than the 7.0 system.
Thanks
Joe
Jaded,
I looked at the FelPro system (I believe it is now called F.A.S.T.) with the wide band O2. I plan to use this on my '89, but the '87 is still running the factory computer with Formato chip and MAF. The real drawback that I saw when switching was the $2000+ required to purchase just the equipment. One of the suppliers quoted $1600 for the unit with the WBO2. The4 harness to tie into the factory harness and locate behing the passenger seat was like $475. That seems like a lot of money.
Are these in the same ballpark that you are currently looking at. The DFI system was less than $1000, but is antiquated compared to the FAST system with the WBO2.
The price that I was quoted was $2000.00 installed for the F.A.S.T. with the wbO2. The only thing extra was the harness to piggy back it with the stock computer. I'm waiting on a price for that now. I want the stock ECM to handle the dash board, anti-lock, and overdrive. The main problem I have is the Formato chip don't work the overdrive. I've sent the chip back three times and they can't get it right. It's either always on or off. I even sent them a Hypertech chip that I used in the 350 to copy the overdrive from and they still can't get it. I will have to buy a stock 88' chip to handle it (the 86' chip has a cold start injector, the 88' don't) and use the F.A.S.T. for the engine. I'll let you know the price as soon as I know.
Jaded,
That sounds about right for the equipment less the additional harness ($1,600 equipment +25% for install).
As for the reasons, if all you are lacking is the overdrive, it seems that this is an awful rash decision to head toward the FAST w/wbO2. I think if that was my issue, I would keep working with Eileen, until she gets it right. Besides, you have already paid for the chip with an operating OD function.
Mine is a whole mess of worms. Eileen is insistant that she can get it right, but then I will probably change something else. It is most people's opinion on this forum as well as in general that I am way beyond the factory computer.
