Last week I start my car up IN THE RAIN and I get an SES light and my fans come on with the engine cold... I get it scanned and it reads "knock sensor"... he clears the code and this morning I wash the car and bingo... SES light and the fans come on  is this a coincidence or is it water related  is replacing a knock sensor the answer... thanks for any help I can get....
you don't mention miles, but the symtoms are dead on for a wet and dying opti...
you need a new waterpump, also. replace both. The pumps start to leak onto the opti, and since you have to remove the pump to reach the opti, replace both. no brainer. the labour is the same either way.
contact carfan18 (Jeff Kopp) for the parts. or call him at 1-800-728-8267. He sells parts at discount for Forum members. Jeff is a God-Like Deity.
Expect 320+/- for the opti, and 130+/- for the pump.
by the way, this is a DIY project. Use hand - no air - tools. there is really not enough room to reach in and use air tools safely, I think.
I did my own opti last winter. not a bad project. expect 4-5 hours. also, get a copy of the Feb 2001 Corvette Fever. Nice article on updating the opti to vented, along with the part numbers.
if you have ANY questions, please, email me. I will be more than happy to help out. abbogus@yahoo.com
Check the weather seal around the Knock sensor plug. It could be shorting out and causing this problem. Is your hood open at the time? Check the wires for wear also.
Good Luck,
Re: OK.. one more time.... help.. (Chris@SpeedDemon)
Thanks for your help guys...I am hopin' it's not the opti for obvious reasons... it may be wishful thinking cause I do have 80,200 miles on her... sounds like it's water related though....guess I also need to find out if the previous owner did any opti work recently... be nice to get lucky with the holidays coming... :D
Check out http://www.moreperformaceinc.com They have an upgrade to the later model optispark and list the parts you need to do it. I'd upgrade so it is more water resistant in the future. Maybe Jeff can get the parts also.
