My 1990 with a 700r4 started to make a grinding/squeaking sound at lower speeds today. It seems to be quieter/goes away at highway speeds. When I put it in neutral it goes away and comes back as soon as I drop it in gear. What could the problem be? Is it time for a rebuild?
When you say, "drop it into neutral", are you talking about when you're sitting still (not moving) or while driving? The reason I ask is because you said it seems to go away when you're at lower speeds. An idea that came into my mind at first was badly worn brakes. If you're driving, you can be on the wear indicators and you'll hear grinding sounds even when you're not on the brakes. But if you're in neutral and/or not moving, you won't hear the grinding sound. If that's it, moving just an inch, you'll be able to hear the noise. You may want to pull all the wheels off and take a quick look at the pads. You should be able to tell really quickly and easily if your brakes are toast.
I really don't think you need a rebuild because I would think that you'd hear something when you were in neutral if it was an engine problem. But I could be wrong.
There are no check engine lights lit on the dash? Did this grinding start all of a sudden? Did you or someone work on the car and then the noise began? Is this noise still there with the A/C on and off?
The more info. you can give us, the more we'll be able to guide you. When did this noise begin? Has it gotten any worse or better since it began? Are you sure it's grinding you're hearing and not pinging?
It's definitely a grinding sound and the sound goes away at higher speeds. When the car is rolling I put it in neutral and the grinding stops. The grinding will start as soon as I put it in drive. The sound is the same no matter what gear or rpm the car is in. It only speeds up as the car goes faster.
I thought it was the left rear brake at first but there is no change in the grinding sound when I step on the brakes. I'll take a look at them.
