Transgo will help you out in terms of lifespan too. It raises fluid pressure for the 2/3 & 3/4 clutch packs keeping em from slipping too much during the shifts. The stock slow shift is nice for those who dont like the kick in the pants shift, but it costs you durability and lifespan... Transgo will make your tranny stronger and shift faster, many see .2 second improvement in the 1/4...
If you rebuild, also use some aftermarket steels and disks that are more durable than the OEM.. TCI has a good kit that is economical. Level 10's is pricey... But would have loved to used theirs as their article seemed pretty informative and believe that they good understanding of what it takes to make the 700R4/4L60E durable.

Re: Tranny = Kaboom (NoWorries)
My tranny shaft seal went bye bye 5 months ago. Since it's going to cost $$$ anyway, I had the guy rebuilt it with hi perf parts. It's been running like a champ ever since. I Guess for $1500, this is worth it. By the way, mac 'n' cheese for 5 months isn't bad! :D
Having had 5 of those transmissions go Kaboom on me, I finally stopped trying to use the GM replacement. I called many shops for a performance one. TCI in Baltimore told me that rather than get there perf trans, I would be better off getting a Jasper unit, have them replace it once a year. I said no way to that!!! I went with the top shelf unit from LevelTen.com. I am hoping it will be my last transmission.
Thanks for the replies everybody. :) This transmission has a Jet 2600 stall converter, transgo shift kit, B&M 6-disk clutch packs with a bullet proof kit. I had 600 miles on this one, and was about to do the break in oil change.
The guy that built it showed me an article of a Z28 running low 8's, and where it said transmission, it said, "700R4 - Built by " them. He said this transmission would last longer than the engine, I think that he kind of knows what he's doing, I think he just has screwed up twice.
The first time it wouldn't shift out of first gear, I pulled the governor out of it and it was fine, it ended up being something grenading on the inside of the transmission.
I just know when I call them tomorrow when they open that they are going to throw something off the wall at me, like, "Your engine has too much torque for that transmission." When I've seen stock transmissions take this...and they said they could build one to do it.
Hey! I fixed it! I'm not sure if the fix is temporary or semi-permanent, but only time will tell that.
I got my symptoms backwards, I thought if it would shift two gears, but not hop over 3rd into fourth, that was the third gear planetary. However, thats wrong, its if the tranny will not skip third, then its the valve body.
So I turned the pressure up all the way. Like, all the way, I pressed the TV slide so far towards the firewall it was going to pop out the other side.
Then I took it driving, it took about two minutes, but it freed up the #3 valve.
He said this transmission would last longer than the engine.
A 700R4 last over 150K. Im inclined to say :bs from what I have seen on this forum but I'll give the tran guy the benefit of the doubt and say I'll believe that when I see it.
For like the bazillionth time.. your user name is rather ironic .. lol :p:
Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I was also thinking back about all of the previous posts where he  's about the thought of any power adder. I guess I would too if I had that kind of luck.
I'm sure you'll get it worked out man, keep us posted. Look on the bright side, first gear is the most fun anyway.
I got 165,000 out of my first 700R4(lost 2nd gear). I've got a little over 125,000 on this one and since installing the mini ram have notice slipping in 3rd gear. I believe this has something to do with the RPM's. From what I understand the boost valve only holds until @ 5000 then the pressure falls off allowing the clutches to slip. I got a new trans that I will be installing over christmas.I will let everyone know how it performs.
