Cluster lighting causing me problems. Sometimes everything lights up fine and sometimes it stays dark. You can gentlely tap the housing and it might restore. I don't think the problem has anything to do with grounds exterior to the cluster. Reminds me of something like a loose pin, some widget heating up, or a cold solder thing. I happen to have an extra bottom board but I don't know what it came out of. I am thinking that I might try changing to this extra board. My car is an automatic and the board in question has the number "6572053688" with bar codes. Anybody know if this will/should work for 84, auto with cruise?

You say that you don't think its the ground but that is the first thing I would suspect with intermitent operation. Do a search, I think there is a post here on how to reground the display. WW

Terrific site! I have Gordan's book but it only gets you so far. I should have stated that I do suspect it it a ground issue but internal to the cluster. I actually think it is in the D3 pin circuit on the board. Based on the site you gave me, I am going to touch my solderinig tip to suspect points like right behind the board's D3 male connector and the tall pin that connects the boards together. Thanks a million.

Just a little feedback for others on what I did. I did touch up the tall pin connectors with solder and I bridged the photo cell with a wire. Before I did these things, the cluster would light up with ignition on, then go dim, them only the direction signal lights would stay on--the rest was dark. Now, everything stays on and is bright. I won't have the photo cell but don't really care. I can dependably see everything all the time now. Problem solved

Oh, I have a couple of old boards with photo cells in them and I probably will replace the bad one in my cluster someday? Not that difficult of fix now that I have a little experience.
