86 was the only year with forged pistons in the L98. 87-91 had cast pistons and 92-96 had the hyperutectic pistons.

87Stocker ....Thanks..
I have only had this 88' TPI for a month now.. I was just wondering as on cold start up in the moring.. I hear what sound like Forged piston slap, But does go away once it is warmed up. I guess that a 147k engine would/should have some.. LOL.
I did try searching for a while, but didn't come across any hits.

I thought 85 was the only year for forged pistons.

84 and 85 have TRW forged pistons.

86-91 have cast pistons.

I may have to re-think boring my 85, the cylinders are ok and the pistons looked good maybe I will build a 380 instead of a 383.

If I replace them do they have any value to anybody?

What's to re-think? The way the stock pistons were made makes a difference in whether the cylinders are worn or not? Worn, scuffed, or damaged pistons all of a sudden become new if they were forged rather than cast? If you replace the pistons they are worth as much to the next guy as they were to you...nothing. Recycle them with your empty beer cans.

You were going to waste money boring cylinders and replacing pistons where, "the cylinders are ok and the pistons looked good"???

1985 was the ONLY L98 to get forged pistons from the factory. Contrary to post #2, 1986 did not come with forged pistons.

My FSM (1984) says cast pistons. Both our FSMs have mis-prints.

CFI-EFI

It was said half in humor, but also to learn.

As far as over boring a good bore or as you said "Waste Money" the fact is the bore has a lot of miles on them, If you buy a kit the pistons are basically free as compared to buying everything separate and if I go with new Pistons I can build as a package not what will work with the Stock ones.

HUH??? Can you translate the last half of that? First, with any "kit" anything you delete will be a "credit" to the base kit price. The credit is nowhere near as much as they cost as a stand alone item, but there IS money back. And even IF the pistons are free, the boring is not. In addition, you said, "the cylinders are ok and the pistons looked good". What does "ok" mean? Did you check the cylinders for out of round? Taper? A lack of scoring doesn't necessarily mean OK.

If you can get the stock pistons to work with 3.75 stroker crank you will be the first

Oh Snap. I guess I best stay away from Foxworthys 5th grader show.
" The Pistons are made of cast aluminum alloy using two compression rings and one oil control ring"

"Connecting rods are made of forged steel."

I apologize as this is going nowhere.

If new Pistons are used and they will be, I can spec them for the heads and compression that is needed. If I were to use the stock Pistons I would have to base the heads, compression, ect around what I have, not what might be best. But as Rodj stated, they wont work on a stroker anyway.

Yes they will. Contrary to what Rodj posted, "If you can get the stock pistons to work with 3.75 stroker crank you will be the first", you wouldn't be the first.

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe you just have to use stock 400 or 5.5 in. long rods!

Enlighten me

3.750 stroker pistons run about .125 different lower CH to accomodate the extra stroke.
Allowing .025 for avg deck height that would put the stock piston .100 out of the bore unless you change rods?
