I finally fired up my new 383 today. It's running great-->no error codes, no leaks, and it runs smoothly.:D It appears that I didn't buy very good wire splitloom. That stuff started melting like crazy half way thru the cam break-in time. Oh well, that's a minor problem.
The big problem is that the 4+3 transmission is stuck in reverse...sort of. I can shift into all 4 forward gears but if I start to let out the clutch the car goes no where and it ends up killing the engine. When the stick is in neutral the car is really in reverse! If you let the clutch out you start moving in reverse. Also I can't seem to actually move the shifter into the reverse gate. The transmission worked just fine when I took it out of the car a year and half ago. It's had oil in it the whole time but it obviously hasn't been driven in a while.
I can only imagine that the gearbox section of the 4+3 is screwed up. What do you guys think? Has this ever happened to you?
Yah I had that happen once. I was leaving a stop light one day, and when I went to shift into second the lever came straight back with no effort. I pulled over to the side of the road and tried to jimmy it into another gear by going into reverse and back. Once I put it into reverse though, that was it I couldn't get it back out.
It turned out to be broken shift linkage inside the transmission.
FYI, you can access the linkage without dropping the tranny by the using the access cover on the left side.
Looks like you called it, mash. I forgot that the reverse shift rod can be installed in two different positions, and I picked the wrong one. It works fine now. I guess this is what happens when you stretch a project out too long.
Happy to be of assistance. I know your pain...mine has been apart since August or so. Rear suspension all over. So far only piece I can't lay my hands on is the bleeping exhaust clamp that goes in front of the converter. Gotta be in the garage somewhere.
