Default Trunk Mounted Battery

First of all, I know a C4 doesn't have a trunk. It's just the best way to get my point across.
Have any of you mounted (placed) your battery in the cargo area?
Did it seem to help w/ weight transfer for cornering or traction at the strip?
Let's see pics if you have them.

Mine is in the back, under the car. Right rear corner.

If you relocate the battery, NHRA requires a kill switch at the back bumper. Just so you know, so you can include it when you do the move.

I was thinking about mounting a cut-off switch through the license plate. That way, no holes in the body.

I put mine in the passenger side storage compartment. I have been through tech, but my car looks pretty stock so they never looked at it. I don't have the bumper switch, and it is basically mounted to the plastic. I built the inside of the compartment so it is flat inside, then installed the battery and bolted it through the floor. Problem is, I hear that the battery must be bolted to the frame. I wonder if, in an accident, if that battery would be heavy enough to rip out or something. The good part is that everything in there is plastic, so there isn't much to short out on.

I don't know how I feel about all this, not that great. I suppose one would just need to make a metal plated that went from the frame to the bottom of the plastic bin to make it NHRA legal and somewhat safer. Maybe that is what I will do.

If you look in My Corvette Photo's, you can see a few pics of my optima mounted in the RR compartment.

I used a standard aftermarket battery tray, supported by a 4x4 block to make a level platform across the upper shelf in the storage compartment. Someday, I may upgrade the plastic battery tray, if I find one that I like and maybe also orient the battery vertically to get it lower in the chassis, rather than sit on the shelf.

The cables run over the c-beam, in front of the LR wheel then into the rocker panel. From there they route to the original battery tray location where I've installed a quick disconnect (large grey connector). I also have a local ground attached the the rear bulkhead.

if this is a track only car, that's a good choice, but if it's a streeter, you may run afoul of the law.

If this is a street car, then why not sacrifice one of the backup lamps instead (take one out and fab a plate to replace it, using a "No-Lite" decal, and mounting the cutoff switch there.. easily returnable to stock).

My 88 is a track only car. The battery is mounted in the cargo area, in a marine battery box secured by allthread and flatbars across the top. I put the wiring for the cutoff through the hole that was left after the radio antenna was removed.

I'll be doing this as part of my solid rear project.

Probably will run 2 Optimas for a little extra rear weight.

Nice clean installation. What wire did you use and where did you get it? I never use that compartment any way.

Thanks.

The wire is 2 guage welding cable. I picked it up locally at a welding supply store.

The large grey connector I found online somewhere.

I still have one in a box. Its labelled as Total Source SY632565. Its a 175 AMP 2 GA connector. There is another number on the box also 042600.

I had planned to put short side post leads on the second connector if I ever wanted to revert back to the stock location, I'd just have to plug the other connector in.

Finally, a way to install an Optima battery without surgery. Thanks for the info.
