I'm on a rotational weight reduction kick right now. I picked up a set of GTO spares with M&H frontrunners and knocked about 52 pounds off of the nose. Big difference in performance.
Now I'm trying to figure out what to use out back. My stock Collector Edition wheels weigh in at 20 pounds each. My aftermarket GS rims weigh in at 23 pounds each and with tires weigh in at a staggering 50 pounds.
What's the lightest rim to use on the rear that will fit over the brakes?
I can't tell you the exact weight, but the CCWs I run for autoxing are noticably lighter than my stock rims, they are CCW classics. They make some good wheels but can be a little expensive, unless you can find a pair used. http://www.ccwheel.com/files/home.php
The C5 Y2k thin spokes or the magnesium wheels will probably be the lightest that will be easy to find and fit for the price and have a decent width, but then they will be 18's.
I would get a GM A-Mold GS wheel 17x11 and concentrate more of finding the lightest tire.
Chris,
Did you weigh the GTO wheels without the tires? I just picked up 2 new front ProStars #54270 and they are #10.5 each. I didn't get the tires yet to check them, maybe this weekend.

No, I wasn't able to weigh them without the tires since they came with the M&H's already on the rims. They weigh 24 pounds with tires and rims and the rims are 17's.
How are you going to get the ProStars to fit over your brakes? I assume you have the 13 inch rotors too.
I dont know about you guys, but doing drastic things that distort the looks of the vette(like skinnies do) to get better ETs defeat the purpose of your cars potential as a street car. I mean you still have a half sec to gain in head work and it might be a record if you can get into the 10s with stock bottom end N/A 350. Thats just me!

Test fit them today with a 5/16 spacer and there is plenty of room. I couldn't find any deal on used stuff so I just bought new. I want to get them powdercoated black before mounting the tires.

I went 10's in full street trim, just with dragradials. I'm happy with that for a "street car"
C5 Magnesium wheels are the lightest - even lighter than Z06 wheels.
I am running the 17's up front and 18's rear, plus I bought an extra pair of 18's with drag radial for the rear...
The drag radials were incredibly lighter than street tires!!!!!
What might be a better setup would be to run the 17" mags (16 pds)on the rear with drag radials to get a little more sidewall flex & contact patch on launch.....weight would also be lighter than the 18's
This is a very informative thread...lots of weight data provided
If its for use at the track then get a set of 16 in rear wheels. Lots of choices out there. I bet a set of F body 16x8s would work fine and you have more choices in tires. Put some et streets on a set of those and go. I think you can use 15s in back but have to grind the outside of the rear calipers a bit to gain enough clearance.
Just FYI, but Dymags came in 11" widths for the Corvette Challenge cars. They are supposedly quite light, though hard to find and pricey. The C5 mag wheels would probably be easier to find and cheaper, though they are not as wide.
If you want light, you want Bogart or Monocoque wheels. They are the lightest wheels availiable and either company will build them in any size known to man. All the Stock Eliminator racers use them for this very reason.
With 15" wheels you will have to grind a bit off the caliper for clearance. 16" wheels will clear with no problems.
