Alright. Every time I post one of these it goes to further show my absolute ignorance about all of this stuff, which is why I am utterly dependent upon all of you for help.
Most motors that I have listened to sound fairly smooth when running, but my l98 always has that tick, tick, tick, tick from under the valve covers. Lifters? Anyways, is that pretty normal on these or is their an adjustment that needs to happen?
Also, refresh my memory...what fluid is it that you spray around the running engine to find vacuum leaks, starter fluid???
Could be lifters but the injectors do make a ticking noise that can throw you off and have you thinking a valve adjustment is in order, they sound similar. most of them do make noise, some more than others.
Carb cleaner. Thats it. I new it was something like that. The reason I need to check is because if you hit the gas from an idle there is a very brief moment in there where it seems like there is some hesitation and the sound of sucking air. Otherwise seems ok.
As far as the ticking goes--just thought that i would ask. Its not an oil knock or anything, just a definite tick, tick, tick, from the lifters inside the valve covers. Just wanted to make sure that was normal.
The screwdriver he is referring to is to place against the valve cover and put your ear to the other end--you can listen like a doctor! You'll be able to hear very well this way.

Reason: addition
If I had to lean a direction, I would say MU, but I didn't go to either. I started at Truman State in Kirksville MO and ended up going to a seminary here in KC to finish out.
So by listening through the screwdriver I should be able to tell if the ticking is coming from under the VC or not?
