I have a LT4 in my 96 Vette. I am wanting to change to a larger cam...without getting radical. What is the limits that the stock LT4 valve springs can take....could I slip a LT4 hotcam in and keep my stock springs?
I think the stock springs can take the Hotcam. However, it's always best to play it safe. I'm planning on upgrading to a CC503 this summer, and going with some higher rate springs just to stay on the safe side.
The Hot Cam kit comes with LT4 springs, so you should be ok. I did an LT4 top end and ordered the Hot Cam kit...since the Heads already where complete when I bought them new...I ended up with an extra set of LT4 springs...
Just wanted to make sure that the springs in the hotcam kit were not upgrades like the cam...it just seems stupid that Gm wouldn't have put the Hotcam in at the factory....but then it has more power than the LS1 and you can't out do the new motor in the new body style!
Keep in mind that lift is not the only consideration. Some cams have more aggressive ramp rates and although the lift is under a certain limit, the lobes are too radical for the spring.
Also, keep in mind that the LT4 heads used lighter valves than the LT1, so less weight for the spring to control. Heavier valves will require a stiffer spring all things equal.
As stated above, the hotcam springs were made for use on a lighter valve at that lift and that RPM. The hot SBC combo in my area is using the 26918 beehive spring.
