Default Drag Radial recomendations

March 1st Beach Bend race track opens in Bowiling Green KY. I am thinking about taking my car down there and seeing what it will do. It will be the car and my first time on a drag strip.

I have Goodyear GS D3's on the rear now and they are completely toast. The car has 9.5 inch wide rims on the back. My plan is to put DR's on these and get another complete set of rims later. Can I squeeze a 305 or a 315 on these rims? Whats brand has a good drag radial?

I don't think you can run 305's or 315's on 17" rims... if i remember correctly, getting old and somewhat forgetfull. But sure someone will chime in

I would run 275/40 Nitto 555R's Drag Radial or the BFG's are also good. Both make them for 17's.

You can fit a 315 but it will bubble out a little. Its still safe to drive on. Just makes the tires look a little too wide for the rims. I ran 315's on a 9" rim on my mustang so thats how i know. 275's will fit right, hook good, look good and will prob be your best choice.

Ok thanks,

What about this tire, I guess it has a little stiffer side wall than just the regular DR, its a Nitto 555R II Extreme. I could put these on all 4 corners.

MT Street ET Radials - 275/40/17's
Great drag radial that you can drive to and from the track on. Just don't hit water or rain...then you will have your hands full.

I really wouldn't worry about a drag radial for your first time at the drag strip. Just put some decent street tires on it and call it a day.

I tried to make do with street tires for several years, and just couldn't get good 60' times. Once I went with the MT ET Streets, I started getting consistent times in the low 1.7's and occasionally in the high 1.6's. Never wheelspin.

Nitto The weakest at the track of the three but by far the long lasting and best mannered on the street

BFG Better at the track than the Nittos, but not won't last as long on the street

MT DRs Best of the three (by far) at the track and they hold their own on the street. After trying the MTs I will never try another DR.

BTW all three of these come in 275/40/17 and 315/35/17 although the MTs are still hard to come in 315/35/17

Hey man - let me know if you make it up this way, might try to see you over there. Don't think mine will be ready by then. Late March maybe.

If it's your first time I wouldn't worry about drag radials. If you are confident that you are going to be tracking the car a LOT then drag radials make sense. Also if your car is a true daily driver that sees a lot of rain you need to think twice - they are NOT good in the rain.

I ran 315 BFG drag radial in 18" size on my car and will be running their 345 this season.

But I've heard a LOT of good things about the MT so I'm gonna run that after I wear out the BFG's - they just recently introduced their 345 in an 18" size and it also has more sidewall than the BFG's so it should help me punch the tire in the ground a little better.

My car is just a weekend toy. The last time I drove it to work I took it back home because I thought it was going to rain The thing will not hook at all right now with the GS D3 so I figured why not go straight to the DR's. You never know I might be addicted after I run it....

Sounds like the MT is the way to go.

Mts may be the stickiest at the track but the Nittos look so good and you can get 15,000 miles out of them.

I have 4 17" x 9.5" Zr1 O.E wheels w/ Nitto 555Rii's mounted that I'm going to post for sale. The wheels and tires have 15- 20 minute sessions on them and about 300 street miles. All in great shape. The only catch is 2 are silver and 2 are dark gray. $300 / pair + shipping.
